Monday Motivation - How To Wake Up Happy

May 4, 2020

During this WFH (Work From Home) times, I found that a lot of people have difficulties waking up in a happy state of mind, mainly due to the lack of physically going to the office. How you wake up in the morning can have a huge impact on the rest of your day. If you wake up in a bad mood and rushed for time, odds are you’re setting yourself up for negativity throughout the day. Here are a couple of steps I take to wake up happy that you can too:

1. Pick out your outfit the night before

Quite often it takes me longer than 30 minutes to pick out an outfit for the day, and I can't tell you how much stress it brings to start the day. I try on a multitude of combinations and by the time I'm satisfied and fully dressed I'm rushing out the door to catch my morning commute!

I’ve found that if I pick out my outfit the night before including accessories – handbag, shoes, and any jewelry I plan to wear. I keep the outfit hanging right by my closet so it’s easy to access in the morning.

2. Clean up the kitchen the night before

For me, I am so much happier when I wake up and have coffee ready for the pour-over in a kitchen that is clean. If you make it a point to wash the dirty dishes the night before, it makes all the difference when you wake up. It is much easier to cook breakfast without all the clutter, too!

3. Meditate (Many Different Ways)

Meditation is the perfect way to set the tone for your entire day and help you stay focused, content, and optimistic. If you’re new to meditation, try following this:
If you are sitting or laying down, take a moment, and close your eyes.

Take 3 deep nourishing breaths. Deep inhales, deeper exhales. This will set your slate clean for your meditation practice and get your nervous system to a place where it can relax a little deeper. The more deep breathing you do, the more your body will receive it!

Focus your attention on the breath and on how the body moves with each inhalation and exhalation. Observe your body softening as you relax and soften your shoulders, chest, rib cage, and jaw. Allow your breath to flow naturally, and feel everything relax with ease. If your mind wanders, just come back to your breath.

If you need to, set a timer for 5 minutes and start there. You don’t have to meditate every day for 10 minutes to feel centered, your practices could be 2 days a week for only 5 minutes.

I also find that journaling for a few minutes, writing down everything your thankful for that day, helps me ease my way into the morning. Set up a journal right next to your bed and as soon as you wake up start writing down your thoughts and feelings. Another mediation practice I use to make me feel happy during the morning is to listen to my favorite songs while getting ready. I'm currently listening on repeat all of the Mamma Mia Here We Go Again! I end up singing so much and dancing that it's incredibly hard not to smile and be happy!

I’d love to hear some things you do in the morning to start your day out on a positive note! Let us all know in the comments.
xoxo Ashley
