How To Build A Capsule Wardrobe

November 25, 2019

My journey to building a capsule wardrobe has been challenging but fun. I'm the type of girl that loves a neutral pallet with pops of color and patterns and with fast fashion hitting all the right targets in this department it can be so tempting to buy the new "it" color/pattern. However, what I have learnt in college is that fast fashion is dangerously close to killing our planet, and I just can't have that guilt hanging over my head anymore. So I started collecting quality, and long lasting pieces where I don't have to sacrifice my fashionable style!

Where To Begin

1. Pare down your closet to 30-40 items.
2. Wear only those items for three months.
3. Don’t go shopping during the season.
4. During the last two weeks of the season, plan and shop for your next capsule.
5. The amount you buy for the next capsule is up to you, but less is always more.

Minimalist Your Closet

Start with clearing out your closet. We all do this at some point, be it seasonal or just plain done zo with our clothing style, right? So start there. Look through your clothing options and take note on what you wear the most, the colors that compliment you and your skin tone the most, even consider the silhouette of that piece, does it really work with more than one outfit combo?

Take Mental Photos

That's the next part, start taking mental pictures of how this article of clothing works how many times in an outfit. Bonus points if you actually take pictures of it on you or as a flat lay! You should keep those photos for outfit references like if you were Cher from Clueless! If it works for at least one whole week of outfits then its a definite keeper. You'll be amazed at how many different outfits you can create with just one top!

Separate Into Piles

What I do after mental pictures is to sort out colors, patterns, style, and silhouettes. I do this because it allows me to physically see the item in its own categories and makes it easier to style on myself for photo references. For example I love the colors blue, pink, and white on me and start by creating three piles of these colors and for each color I will make sub-piles such as blouses, tanks, and tees or shorts, pants, skirts and dresses. In each of these piles I'll try on the piece, reflect on what I see, and determine if I like how I look in it.

Take Real Photos

With each piece of clothing you've chosen to keep, take a minimum of 7 photos with different looks so you have a record of what you can pair your clothing with. I say to take seven pictures because you'd have a whole weeks worth of clothing to wear for your reference! As mentioned above you could take flat lay photos of all your clothing ideas, which would make for killer Insta ideas, but I would advise to take photos of the clothing on you too, this way you know how the clothing lays on you and fits you.

Let me know if you created your own capsule wardrobe and if you have any tips on it, we'd love to hear them!
xoxo Ashley
